Call for a greener, worthier and fairer Mallorca.
This is a call to all those who love Mallorca and who believe and feel that it is worth preserving its landscape, its natural and agricultural ecosystems and its fragile beauty. This is an urgent call from people like you, that you see with concern the wild growth of tourism, the excess of construction and the road model based on highways that put the island in danger to a limit that we would never have imagined.
Behind the new highways there are large urbanizations and large isolated villas. The forests, mountains and fertile lands, that have sustained our lives to our days, have been built on. Behind each new highway there are large multinational shopping malls, industrial areas and quarries, which remove or replace agriculture, traditional shops, craftsmen and small local industries that give meaning to the towns and the island. This predatory model does not even contribute to an improvement of the living conditions of the people, but quite the opposite.
In addition, this new Mallorca is accessed by car, only by car, because much of the existing railway network has been dismantled and the existing public transport is insufficient and expensive. The imposition of this nonsense has led us to have the highest car density on the planet, leading to saturation, endless traffic jams, increase of environmental pollution, high accident rates, decrease of the life quality, huge economic costs, political and corporate corruption and increase of the negative environmental indicators. However, the more roads are built, the more cars there will be.
Unfortunately, neither the previous governments nor the present one, have shown real will to reverse this situation and to position for collective public transport. The electoral programs speak of an ecological transition. The government agreements say that there will be more and better protection of the territory. The mobility plans ensure that they are in favour of sustainable mobility. But in the end these are only promises. Even the political forces that historically fought against highways, like the highway Llucmajor-Campos, now impose them, sweeping landscapes, promises and hopes for a better future.
For many years thousands of people, local entities and organizations have been doing everything they know and can to have a better Mallorca. Great victories have been achieved, but now the wave of asphalt and concrete is very large, it affects the whole island and more help than ever is needed to slow it down. That is why we make this call to all the people who love Mallorca to join this last outcry, to show their rejection against the construction of new highways, roads, urbanizations and the predatory urban planning.
